Unlike in the other societies, Air Nomads nearly all of the population had an equal role or position but there were a few who were still recognized with special honors and authority.

Elder Council[]

The elder council were a group of the oldest Air Nomads who worked together and were accepted due to their accomplishments for their society. The council members made decisions through group votes.

Non-Council Members[]

Instructors: Instructors were among the top of society due to the importance of teaching and sharing knowledge so that the elders can equip the younger generations for their futures. This includes educational teachers, historians, priests, and combat instructors.

Librarians: Directly below instructors are librarians who are given the honor to facilitate learning centers which are viewed as key pillars of society.

Age Hierarchy[]

There is a certain amount of respect that goes from person to person depending on age. This level of respect is not a factor when someone commits a crime, is a poor example for youth, or clearly violates the respect of someone younger than them.

Elders: These are adults in their 50s or older. This is generally the minimum age to become an elder council member. As elders become ill or senile, senior adults are expected to care for them. Elders are also given the option to retire or continue working.

Senior adults: Adults ages 35-49. Senior adults are given full societal privileges and are expected to start becoming mentors for the younger age groups. During different timelines, people were not even eligible to become instructors or head librarians. There is a position for assistant librarians (for young adults) and junior librarians for junior adults. Young adults can also be teacher aids or assistants under senior adults. Senior adults are expected to work.

Young adults: Adults ages 17-34 (this is different from the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation where the age of adulthood is 16 or the Water Tribe where it is 15). While seen as adults in terms of their ability to obtain independence, these adults are not given all the luxuries in society yet and are expected to learn how to control themselves as they prepare for the next stages of life. With each year, the young adults gain more respect and privileges so long as they are not banished or put on corrective discipline. Seventeen is also the age of banishment where bad discipline and crimes can have someone ousted from their society.

Young adults are expected to work.

Junior adults: Also called preadults and protoadults. These are 12-16 year old adolescents which are viewed as real adults but youth who are on the verge of adulthood. It is at this age that youth are encouraged to double down on schooling, reading, exploring with older chaperons, and undergoing manhood or womanhood training before officially becoming independent adults.

Junior adults are allowed to work if they are approved by their guardians.

Children: Ages 0-11 are all considered children. There is no real difference from the classification babies (0-2), toddlers (3-5), little children (6-9), and moderate children (10-11) get. They are all seen as being under the age of any sort of understanding of right and wrong. But once a child hits 12, they hit the age of relative maturity where they are expected to have a basic understanding of what is wrong and right.
