The Purple Burrays were a rebel faction of freedom fighters who opposed the Fire Nation. The Burrays managed to overthrow the Fire Nation territory Egar's Island. The Purple Burrays was made almost entirely of nonbenders, to make up for this disadvantage the group consisted of several guerrilla experts. These warriors used guerrilla warfare tactics to defeat Fire Nation troopers. Their tactics included: ambushes, flanking, setting traps, and wearing camouflaged uniforms.
The name purple doesn't refer to the color of their uniforms. Instead, purple refers to the idea of bravery. Throughout its history, members of the village revered the color purple. It was seen as an honor to get any purple reward.
Infantry Classes
There were several infantry classes within the Purple Burrays.
Swordsmen/swordswomen: These troops were armed with short or long swords. Some of them used dual swords.
Axmen: Large men with battle axes. They were known for being durable and able to tank several hits before going down. They often served as a distraction, taking their enemies head on while the flankers attacked from other directions.
Archers: The archers often bombarded enemies from the distance while the swordsmen flanked their enemies. Sometimes archers were scouts for the group.
Spearmen/women: Spear warriors typically fought alongside the other sword-wielding warriors.
Leader
Raggis Praxus was the feared leader of the group. He was known for doing whatever it took to win against his enemies. He was sharp, fast, and crafty. Raggis was said to be even faster than Mai. He moved as a blur in battle and was proficient at stealth. Raggis could also take his enemies head on and was an exceptional duelist. During one battle, Raggis took down a team of eight Fire Nation troopers by himself, including two Fire Benders. Raggis was capable of blocking flames with his unique swords.
Raggis made his last stand against Captain Macai on Eggar's island.
Legacy
The Purple Burrays inspired resistance groups throughout the Fire Nation. They also inspired Earth Kingdom soldiers and freedom fighters. Jet the freedom fighter heard stories about Raggis during his childhood and took some inspiration from him. The Purple Burrays not only defeat the Fire Nation forces garrisoned on their island, they also managed to fight off several units that attempted to take their land. For months, no Fire Nation forces could take the Island.
It was then that Macai's unit was tasked with defeating the group and executing Raggis Praxus.
